Almost 20\u00a0years ago, I graduated from the Hospital Centro M\u00e9dico\u00a0Nacional Siglo XXI, where I have worked for 14 years as\u00a0the head of the Department of Neurophysiology.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Dr. Sergio Aguilar Castillo - Mexico\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OjFGO2b05Bc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>NN: Doctor, what are the services offered by Centro\u00a0<\/strong><strong>M\u00e9dico Siglo XXI?<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. Sergio de Jes\u00fas Aguilar Castillo: The department\u00a0of Neurophysiology was implemented in the Hospital\u00a0Centro M\u00e9dico Siglo XXI, 14 years ago, aiming to\u00a0provide specialized care in Neurological diagnosis. We\u00a0are a reference hospital and as a reference hospital,\u00a0we receive patients with difficult diagnoses from the\u00a0southern part of the republic, focusing in EEG, EMG and\u00a0evoked potentials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NN: Doctor, could you tell us about the relationship\u00a0<\/strong><strong>between sleep and epilepsy?<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. Sergio de Jes\u00fas Aguilar Castillo: Our research\u00a0areas have focused on two important aspects: One is\u00a0the identification and categorization of patients with\u00a0acquired neuropathies such as Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome,\u00a0and the other major section is electroencephalography.<br \/>\nWe have two major areas of interest: One is the\u00a0epileptic state and epilepsies and the other is epilepsy\u00a0and the relationship with sleep.<br \/>\nAn area of interest that has been awakened lately\u00a0is the relationship between sleep and epilepsy. It is\u00a0an area where extra effort has been put on to find\u00a0the links between the facilitation and presentation of\u00a0epileptic crises, especially in epilepsies cases of difficult\u00a0control or diagnosis. Nocturnal frontal epilepsy is one\u00a0of the difficult cases, which has been under-diagnosed\u00a0and misdiagnosed as other sleep disorders such as\u00a0nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia or abnormal movements\u00a0during sleep. The frontal nocturnal epilepsy is a difficult\u00a0condition to diagnose and its antecedents come from\u00a0the \u201870s\/\u201980s; however, it was only in the \u201890s that the\u00a0disorder could be categorized. This is an epilepsy that\u00a0is not classified as common due to its symptoms, since\u00a0the fact that this epilepsy originates in the frontal ovum\u00a0the characteristics and manifestations are very special.<br \/>\nFor example, the patients may have clustering crisis at\u00a0night and experience rapid atypical crisis and totally\u00a0uncontrolled movements. These epilepsies, may be\u00a0confused with other sleep disorders, and in the past it\u00a0was called paroxysmal epilepsy or paroxysmal nocturnal\u00a0dysphonia that has been misdiagnosed as REM Sleep\u00a0Behavior Disorder, or with other movement disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Some publications have shown that nocturnal\u00a0frontal epilepsy has a genetic determination that\u00a0makes its characteristics. The diagnosis of nocturnal\u00a0frontal epilepsy is based mainly on the application of\u00a0technological tools available at the moment, and not\u00a0only EEG traces \u2013 which most of the time the patient\u00a0has normal tracing \u2013 and when the episode is presented,\u00a0the electroencephalographic activity is obscured by the\u00a0number of artifacts that are presented by the sudden\u00a0movements. Therefore, the relationship and the link\u00a0that exists between the electro-encephalography and\u00a0the video are of a vital Importance to identify these<br \/>\ncases, i.e., the study video EEG with the nocturnal\u00a0registry that we can call the video PSG has been the\u00a0cornerstone, to identify these disorders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NN: Doctor, would you recommend Neurovirtual to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>your colleagues?<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. Sergio de Jes\u00fas Aguilar Castillo: At our Hospital,\u00a0Centro M\u00e9dico Siglo XXI, we have been using the\u00a0Neurovirtual video EEG for over a year.
